type='text'>General Updates

It is almost the middle of the month and the season is winding down. We have added several features to ballparksofbaseball.com. Every month we receive several emails asking about teams and their home dugouts, whether they are on the first or third base side. On each ballpark page, you can now find out whether your favorite team's dugout is on the first or third base side. Traditionally one thinks that the home dugout is on the first base side. However, currently there are 18 teams with their dugout on the first base side and 12 teams with their dugout on the third base side.

We have also added a section on each ballpark section that contains information about each ballpark's ground rules. This also includes rules for opening/closing retractable roofs.

New pictures can also be found on the Miller Park page.

New Month...New Updates

Wow it's already September. If you have never visited San Francisco or Oakland, you should defiantly go. If you like chilly weather during the middle of the summer, it is defiantly a must. What a difference between visiting both Bay Area ballparks. AT&T Park is a ballpark that no fan should pass up visiting. The views throughout the ballpark are awesome of the Bay and the city. If you have never visited a multipurpose stadium, check out McAfee Coliseum. Cheap tickets and some great fans here.

New pictures and updates on Cit Field, Yankee Stadium and the Twins future ballpark pages:

http://www.ballparksofbaseball.com/future/CitiField.htm
http://www.ballparksofbaseball.com/future/TwinsBallpark.htm
http://www.ballparksofbaseball.com/future/YankeeStadiumII.htm

to the Bay Area

ballparksofbaseball.com will be in the Bay Area the end of this week and throughout the weekend to cover the A's and Giants games. It has been nearly 18 years since the last classic ballpark, Comiskey Park was demolished. Other stadiums have been demolished since 1990, but done with the history that Tiger Stadium has. The stadium has basically sat empty since 1999 with the exception of a few events. It is structurally in good conditions, however most of the stadium will be demolished over the coming months. Part of the stadium, from dugout to dugout will remain and the site, as of right now, will be turned into a baseball field for youth and others. We will document the demolition of the stadium on our site as soon as pictures become available. The main demolition work isn't expected to begin until after the holiday weekend.

As for new stuff on the website. We have a new monthly feature on our homepage, This Month in Ballpark History. Every month we will post a piece of ballpark history to relieve a certain date in baseball ballpark history. Hope you have a great one. Afternoon baseball on Memorial Day is a great tradition, just like the All-Star Game every summer. On Wednesday MLB will officially announce that the 2010 All-Star Game as been awarded to Anaheim and Angel Stadium. The stadium has not hosted the game since 1989 and it will be the third time it has hosted the mid-summer classic. Each time the Angels have hosted the game, the stadium has had a different look. According to a report it appears that the 2013 will be awarded to the Dodgers since Dodger Stadium celebrates is 50th birthday in 2012. So now its time to predict who will host the All-Star game after 2010 since the Yankees host the game this year and the Cardinals host the 2009 All-Star Game.

2008: Yankee Stadium
2009: Busch Stadium
2010: Angel Stadium
2011: Citi Field or Chase Field (Mets have not hosted the All Star Game since 1964 and the Diamondbacks have never hosted the game)
2012: Kauffman Stadium (MLB promised KC the game if renovations were completed at the stadium. They will be complete by next season)
2013: Dodger Stadium (based on speculation and the Dodgers have not hosted the game since 1980)
2014: Twins Ballpark (The Twins will have a new ballpark by 2014 and have not hosted the game since 1985)
2015: see 2011
2016: Rays Ballpark (If Tampa Bay builds a new ballpark they will be awarded this All-Star Game)
2017: Great American Ball Park (The Reds have not hosted the game since 1988)
2018: Cisco Field (The A's should have a new ballpark by 2018 and it will have been over three decades since they have hosted the game)

All of this is pure speculation. It will be interesting to see what happens!

a lack of updates

Sorry for the lack of blogging with updates to the site and random stuff. It has been a busy time with the baseball season in full swing. The home of the Mets, Citi Field and the new Yankee Stadium is progressing rapidly. Visually it appears that Citi Field could be finished in a month or two. In reality this in not true as there is much work to be completed internally, not to mention the installation of seating and of course the playing field. In the Bronx, work continues on the new Yankee Stadium as some of the 50,000+ seats are beginning to be installed. The lower concrete seating decks are nearly complete. We will have many new construction pictures of both projects soon!

We have updated the financing information on the Rays Ballpark page that contains the latest figures from Tampa Bay.

If you are a big college football fan visit our sister site, College Gridirons at www.collegegridirons.com. The entire website has been redesigned with new information, pictures and more. Nearly 120 college football stadiums are profiled on the site. Baseball just started but college football will be here before you know it!

We have a lot of exciting things in store for ballparksofbaseball.com this summer. We will be on the west coast and New York City soon along with other cities across the country to bring you the latest pictures from your favorite ballparks.

The unofficial start of the summer starts this weekend with Memorial Day. The setting in southern California is hard to beat anywhere.

The Dodger Stadium page has been updated to include the renovation plans and images.

http://www.ballparksofbaseball.com/nl/DodgerStadium.htm

22innings

Wow 22innings of baseball last night between the Rockies and Padres at Petco Park. Well, technically the season has already began with the Red Sox/A's games in Japan earlier this week. However, the traditional opening day is just a few days away on Monday. Most people would agree that Cincinnati should be where the first game is played each season because of their tradition. The Reds open at home on Monday against the Diamondbacks. The city piratically shuts down every Opening Day as kids and adults skip school and work for the day. Opening Day is an unofficial holiday in the City of Cincinnati kicking off with the Findlay Market Opening Day parade through the streets of the city. Events are abound and excitement can be seen all around Cincinnati for the Reds. Tickets to this game are the most sought after each year.

There are several exciting events this weekend. The Boston Red Sox take on the Los Angeles Dodgers at the LA Coliseum on Saturday. The Dodgers are expecting a crowd of nearly 115,000 fans for this game. See the articles on our homepage about the game. This will be a great game to see since many were not born when the Dodgers last played at the Coliseum over 40 years ago.

The Washington Nationals open their new ballpark this weekend as they play the Baltimore Orioles in an exhibition game on Saturday. This will be a test run for the ballpark as the Nationals open the season with the first ever game at Nationals Park on Sunday night against the Atlanta Braves. Check out the ballpark on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball at 8:00pm EST.

Look for new pictures of the LA Coliseum and Nationals Park on ballparksofbaseball.com soon!

Minor League Update

We have updated our minor league ballparks section to reflect changes for the 2008 season. Otherwise fans can take the Metro to the game.

Future's updates...

Updates for 3/4 for several future ballparks:

Yankee Stadium II
Citi Field
Twins Ballpark

And the tarps come off...

The tarps that serve as a type of insulation over the playing field at the Nationals Park have been removed today. It is good to hear an old stadium name back in the sporting world. The name will remain Candlestick Park for the foreseen future. The 49ers probably would have found another corporation to have sold the naming rights to, but a city ballot measure restricted the team from pursuing a new name for the stadium. The City of Chicago should try to do something like this to prevent Wrigley Field from being renamed.

You can read more about the naming rights announcement of Candlestick Park here:

http://origin.mercurynews.com/49ersheadlines/ci_8408920

Another good article that discusses naming rights of stadiums from all sports can be found here:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/03/02/SPK4VBCAH.DTL

115,000 for a ballgame?

The Dodgers say that there is the possibility that 115,000 fans will be at the Dodgers/Red Sox game at the Los Angeles Coliseum at the end of March. This would set a new record for a baseball game, and almost any sport. Even the largest college football stadiums do not have this large of a capacity. This will be a fun and exciting game to watch especially with the short distance to the left field fence at 200feet. ESPN will televise the game for the country to see. type='text'>the Marlins Breakdown

Here's the breakdown of the costs of the Marlins Ballpark:

-$155 million from the Marlins
-$347 million from Miami/Dade County: $297 million from tourist tax dollars
-$13 million from the City of Miami
-Total: $515 million

The ballpark will be built on the site of the Orange Bowl, that will be demolished this year. The Miami Hurricanes who played there are moving to Dolphin Stadium for the 2008 season (And you thought the baseball field was tore up in September because of the Dolphins and now there will be two football teams there). More to come on Thursday when City and County Commissioners meet to possibly finalize this proposal.

Fish Time

A Sunday Blog...Marlins closest to new stadium ever. Although it was built in the 1970s it will become one of the older stadiums in baseball. However, many agree that it is one of the best ballparks in baseball. We have updated the Kauffman Stadium page with some new info along with a picture showing the construction of the stadium. Also new are some renderings of what the stadium will look like once the renovations are completed in 2009 (It took us to long to get these up). New information and pics can be found on the Yankee Stadium II page.

The team also announced that the cost of the stadium has increased to $1.3 billion. That is almost $700 million more than what the Nationals new ballpark will cost. The new Yankee Stadium looks awesome but that's alot of money. The team also announced plans for the current Yankee Stadium. It appears that the entire structure will be demolished and be replaced with a baseball and softball field. You would think they would want to preserve part of the stadium. Hopefully plans will change between now and 2009.

-the Ballparks of Baseball.com team

Welcome Back

Welcome back to the Ballparks of Baseball blog. It has been a while, almost two years since we last posted. Instead of posting commentary about ballparks or other information pertaining to ballparks we will now post updates on when the site is updated and what you can expect to see. We have numerous emails asking us what the latest site updates are so hopefully this will be helpful to everyone visiting the site.

By now you have probably seen the graphic ad for our spring training ballparks section. This section is new for 2008. No longer are all of the Cactus and Grapefruit League ballparks lumped together on the same page. Each ballpark now has its own page. All are similar to our main ballpark pages, so be sure to check it out.

Planning a baseball trip this summer? We have a new website, www.stadiumtravelguide.com to help you out, where ever you may want to travel. There is a ton of information on here to help out with any aspect of planning a trip to one city or multiple cities.

Now for the updates as we are updating information on many ballpark pages after months of research:
New as of 2/7:
Kauffman Stadium
Olympic Stadium
2/6:
Crosley Field
Shibe Park
Forbes Field
Comiskey Park
2/5:
Yankee Stadium II
Citi Field
Twins Ballpark
2/4:
Yankee Stadium
Nationals Park
Fenway Park
Wrigley Field

The American League and National League main pages have been updated to include interactive maps showing the location of each ballpark on them.

So hopefully this information makes it easier for you to see some of the newest info on ballparksofbaseball.com. If you have any questions send us an email through our feedback section or leave comments here and we will answer them ASAP. We always like comments and suggestions.

-the Ballparks of Baseball.com team

FYI...

Over the past couple of weeks we have been updating every page including rewritting the history of many ballparks. The new travel guide section made its debut last week. Hopefully this section will help you and other fans when traveling to various baseball games across the country. Be sure to let us know if anything should be added in this section or to one particular city. Lots of pictures of Yankee Stadium, Shea Stadium, Fenway Park, RFK Stadium, and Citizens Bank Park have been added to the website. If you want larger pictures of these stadium, be sure to let us know. We also have many pictures that have never been posted on the website.

All of the ballpark pages throughout the website have received a slight makeover. It is a big event when it happens, but how many people actually remember these ceremonies? Should be interesting to see whether the ballpark opens in April 2008 like the team hopes. Our guess is that it will not open by that time. It always takes atleast two years for any ballpark to be built if everything goes according to schedule. Speeding up the construction process any faster than it already goes is almost impossible. It will probably be another 2+ years of the Nationals playing at RFK Stadium.

Lets fast forward to 2008 then. RFK Stadium will probably close mid season as the Nationals move into their new ballpark. However that will not be the only stadium closing in 2008. It will be one of the biggest years for the closing of stadiums since the end of the 1999 season when the Astrodome, Tiger Stadium, and Candlestick Park closed. If everything goes according to schedule, Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium will both close at the end of the 2008 season. Just imagine what it will be like at Yankee Stadium for the final game ever. We have been at several stadiums for the final games played and they all had great closing ceremonies but just think what it may be like at Yankee Stadium with everything that has occurred there. Just think about that!

Until the next time,

-BoB.com Blogger

Its becoming a weekly thing....

Looks as this blog is becoming a weekly thing. Things have been kind of slow lately. However, the Twins got good news today with the Minnesota House passing a financial plan for a new ballpark. The Twins have been trying for almost a decade to get a new ballpark and we are sure fans would welcome outdoor baseball again.

If you visited the site on Monday, you may have saw it was down. Sorry about this! April is our biggest month traffic wise and because so many fans were visiting the site, it went down briefly. Hopefully it will not go down any more this month. If so, it will be back up shortly.

In other site news, look for a new section coming in June. More news out of Detroit where it seems the city is dead against anything other than tearing down Tiger Stadium. We have discussed this before in previous posts how the city does not care about the old ballpark when there are people willing to invest in the ballpark to redevelop it.

The views from the new Busch Stadium are great. It is truly a classic ballpark with no gimmicks like some of the other newer ballparks have. We will be making a trip to Busch Stadium in mid July once the stadium is 100% complete.

If you haven't seen TV highlights or watched the Dodgers games so far, be sure to check them out. You can check out the article and rendering at:

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/story/400647p-339426c.html

The rendering is really small. The Mets are supposed to release plans for the ballpark sometime this month. We have not seen any other renderings of the current proposed ballpark other than the one that is found in this news story. We have updated the Mets ballpark page under our future page with the latest information. However, the old renderings of the proposed retractable roof stadium are still up. As you have probably seen on the homepage, the Nationals and the DC Sports Commission released plans for their new ballpark. Interesting design as they seem to have went with a glassy futuristic look. Most would have probably figured they would have went with a Camden Yards type look. The ballpark looks the most like Petco Park. You can see the latest renderings on the Washington Ballpark page in the future section of the website. As more renderings become available, we will post them. You can check out a virtual tour of the ballpark at: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/video/2006/03/14/VI2006031401066.html

The local media out of Detroit is now reporting that Tiger Stadium may be near the end of its life. It will be a sad day if this ballpark is demolished. Hopefully some group or someone will step in to help save this stadium because the city defiantly does not care about Tiger Stadium.

In other news, grass is being laid at the new Busch Stadium today. The entire field should be down by the end of the week. This has to be the worst name for a new stadium in any sport. While naming rights bring in a lot of money for teams they give stadiums bad names. Looking into the past, although they may have been multipurpose the names Riverfront, Three Rivers, and Atlanta Fulton County Stadium were great names. Luckily there are still several ballparks in baseball that are not named after corporations. We will not see Dodger Stadium renamed Staples Field or Yankee Stadium renamed Trump Ballpark anytime soon. Both teams have committed to not selling the naming rights as have the Cubs, Red Sox, and Royals.

If there was not such a thing as selling naming rights, what would today's ballparks be called? Before Minute Maid Park opened it was known as The Ballpark at Union Station. That would have been a great ballpark name. The Giants home has now had three different names since it opened in 2000. Now known as AT&T Park, you have to wonder how many more times it will be renamed. It would be great to see it named something like Willie Mays Park. The same goes with McAfee Coliseum in Oakland. Since the mid 1990s it has had four or five different names. Just give it is oriniginal name Oakland Coliseum.

Perhaps the best name slapped onto a stadium is in Cincinnati on Great American Ball Park. Atleast it sounds decent and isn't something like Safeco, Ameriquest, or Comerica.

That is all for now. No stadium updates this time.

Countdown 'til Opening Day 2006: 22 Days!

Until the next time,

-BoB.com Blogger

Some stuff....

First, we have a couple of new additions to the website. Our highly popular wallpaper section has been updated. Of course it is usually updated at the beginning of each month with two new pictures and we have recently added two additional pictures. Collages of all 30 ballparks with interior and exterior views have been added. We will tweak both once Busch Stadium opens in April. If there is ever a picture you would like to have a larger size of, let us know and we will try to get the size you want.

Of course a new post would not be complete without something from Busch Stadium. KMOV tv took a tour of the new stadium on Friday. Yes football, not baseball is the reason. The Bud Bowl was held at the stadium there this weekend. Fans were not allowed to go into the stands just onto the field where a tent was constructed for this party event. Defiantly check out the articles that are on the homepage as they tell the condition of the stadium today. It is ashame that this classic ballpark has been left to rot when so many people would love to see it in person. Obliviously the City of Detroit and others do not care about Tiger Stadium.

The picture above is one from Friday night from the Detroit Free Press.

The other big news of the weekend is the renaming of SBC Park to AT&T Park. Three different names since this ballpark opened. Wonder how many more times it will change during the next five years. It would be nice if stadiums were named after people or places like they used to be. Willie Mays Field would be a great choice here.

Countdown 'til Opening Day 2006: 58 Days!

Until the next time,

-BoB.com Blogger

new Busch Stadium

The other day I gave a link to some pictures of the new Busch Stadium. KMOV the local CBS affilate in St. Louis does a good job of providing some aerial video and pictures of the new stadium a couple of times a week. They shot some new video this morning. Many baseball fans and all Cardinals fans know that the team will be opening new Busch Stadium in just over two months. We like to keep track of various websites to see if there are any new pictures or video out on the net. John Sebban has added some new pictures from Tuesday, Jan. 31st to his website at:

http://stlbaseball.johnsebben.com/index.php?page=14&gallery=20060106A

Check out his great pics from outside the ballpark. For some reason the Cardinals do not keep up to date pictures of the construction progress on their website.

Sad news out of Philly today, as longtime Phillies organist Paul Richardson is retiring after over three decades of entertaining Phillies fans at games. No announcement on whether anyone will replace him, but its doubtful since a organist booth was not constructed at Citizens Bank Park.

Countdown 'til Opening Day 2006: 62 Days!

Until the next time,

-BoB.com Blogger

The First One....

Hello and welcome to the first blog from Ballparks of Baseball. For several months we have been contemplating on whether or not to start a blog. So we decided to give this a try and see where it goes. This will be an informal way for us to give you perhaps an insiders view for some of the ideas that we have for the site, when we update the site (maybe sometimes, this happens to much to write about it), or just some random thoughts about ballparks and baseball. Look for a new post atleast once a week. Maybe more, hopefully not less!

Feel free to leave comments here about the blog and what we have wrote. Any other comments about the website should be sent through our feedback section of the site.

Now for the blogging part.....

If you haven't checked out the Off Season Ballpark Tour by Anthony Lorenzo yet you are missing out. Each Monday we are posting a new article from a different MLB city that he has visited. Its a great way to start off the week by reading some baseball and to pass the weeks until spring finally gets here!

It's also a good time to start thinking about your summer plans! If you are planning a roadtrip to see your favorite team play it is never to early to start. Two high profile teams, the Yankees and Red Sox, already have placed their tickets on sale and most games are already almost sold out. Several other teams already have tickets on sale, with most other teams putting their tickets on sale in mid February.

Countdown 'til Opening Day 2006: 63 Days!

-BoB.com Blogger
